| It is said that the old castle was destroyed in the 1840s and that Saltmarshe Castle was built about 1845. Constructed in a Gothic style, it occupied the site that formerly belonged to the Coningsby's of Hampton Court. The castle owed its importance to the taste and large expenditure of its late proprietor, Edmund Higginson who at his death in 1871 divided his large property among his relatives the Barnebys and Mr Barneby Lutley. The landlord Mr Barneby often held large festive events in the house. |

After the second world war the estate was sold and, to the great regret of the district, the castle was demolished. There is not much of the castle left, only the odd turret and some of the stone walling. |

Today, the site
plays host to many visitors that choose to spend their vacation
at the caravan site that now occupies the castle grounds. |

Bromyard
is a small market town and was recorded in the Domesday Book of
1086. Its street pattern has remained medieval and it has several
fine black and white half timbered buildings.
It is situated between Worcester to the East and Hereford to the Southwest. It lies on the A44 from Worcester to Leominster. |
